yayoi kusama

tonight ryan and i went to the gagosian gallery in chelsea to see the yayoi kusama opening. i really didn't know much about her and didn't know what to expect but i was pleasantly blown away by one of her works. unfortunately, i'm not sure what it is titled.

this picture does not hold a candle to the experience of viewing the work. the installation is a room covered in mirrors on all sides, with a small platform in the center. the platform is surrounded by still water acting as another reflective surface. all around the room there are small suspended lights that flicker and dim. there is an attendant that lets you in for a minute, the door is closed behind you and you are left feeling as if you were floating in outer space.
i felt an overwhelming sense of calm and delight. it was WONDERFUL, i wish i could move my bed into that room and fall asleep to that experience every night. it was painfully/achingly beautiful.
